Antique French Cast Iron Piggy Bank Money Box Heavy Farmhouse Counter Pig c.1950
A charming vintage French piggy bank dating from around the 1950s, cast in heavy iron and finished in a soft cream paint with hand-painted details. Weighing an impressive 7 lb 12 oz (3.53 kg), this substantial pig has a wonderful solid feel and quality that is immediately apparent when handled. With its expressive face, glass eyes, and pleasing proportions, it makes a delightful decorative piece as well as a functional money box.
Pig-shaped banks have long been popular throughout Europe, and examples such as this were often found in homes, shops, and sometimes on counters where small change could be collected. Given its considerable weight and sturdy construction, this example may well have been used on a butcher's counter, shop counter, or in a farmhouse kitchen, where its practical purpose was matched by its decorative appeal.
The bank retains its original coin slot on the top and is formed in two halves secured by a screw on the side, allowing access to the contents. The soft cream finish is complemented by hand-painted black hooves, pink-tinted ears, and glass eyes that give the pig a charming and expressive character.
Condition is good vintage condition with age-related wear, scuffs, and paint losses consistent with decades of use. These signs of age add to its authentic character and appeal.
A wonderful piece for collectors of pigs, farmhouse décor, country kitchens, vintage advertising and shop display items, or anyone looking for an unusual French decorative object.
