A beautiful antique French silver Jeannette cross, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, accompanied by its exceptionally long and finely worked hallmarked silver chain.

The cross is a particularly impressive example, measuring 3" (7.6 cm) by 2⅛" (5.4 cm). It has wonderful decorative detailing, with an engraved floral motif to the centre, faceted decoration and distinctive ornamental terminals.

The chain is every bit as interesting as the cross. Measuring approximately 54" (137 cm) in circumference, it is formed from beautifully worked silver links with delicate chased decoration. Hallmarks can be seen on numerous links. I believe both the cross and chain are over 100 years old and belong together.

The Jeannette Cross

The Jeannette cross has a charming place in French social history. Traditionally associated with young working women, particularly servant girls, it is said that a girl might use her first wages to buy herself a silver Jeannette cross — a treasured possession and a small symbol of independence. They were often worn on long silver chains, making the exceptionally long and beautifully worked chain accompanying this example especially interesting.

Please note the unusual chain arrangement:
The chain is continuous and does not open like a conventional necklace. The large round spring-ring fitting suspends the Jeannette cross; it is not the fastening used to open the chain. With its generous 54" circumference, the chain is worn by passing it over the head. Please see the photographs, which show this unusual construction clearly.
