Antique Mars Wage Cast Iron Balance Scale | Vintage Kitchen Scale with Brass Bowls

A striking antique Mars Wage balance scale, made in Germany and dating to around 1890.

The scale has a wonderfully decorative red cast iron frame with two large brass weighing pans. Designed to weigh up to 3 kilograms, it would originally have been a practical everyday piece, but today it makes a fabulous display item with all the character of more than a century of use.

The combination of the rich red-painted iron and aged brass is particularly attractive. Both pans have developed a lovely natural patina, while the frame shows the expected marks, wear and areas of paint loss associated with its age and working history. I have left it just as found rather than attempting to restore or polish away its character.

A wonderful piece of antique kitchenalia for a farmhouse kitchen, pantry, restaurant or shop display, and equally appealing to a collector of old weights and measures.
