Antique French Boxwood Needle Case , Walker & Meimarakis Cairo, Sewing Treen
A charming antique needle case dating from the late 19th or early 20th century, made from turned boxwood and retaining its original printed decoration.
The barrel-shaped case was designed to hold sewing needles of different sizes. The rotating top aligns with the numbered graduations, allowing the user to select the desired needle size, while a marked "fermé" position closes the opening when not in use. The body is printed with French wording including "Étuis à Aiguilles" (Needle Cases), "Marque de Fabrique" (Trademark), and a registered model number. It also bears the retailer's mark "Walker & Meimarakis, Cairo."
Small sewing accessories such as this were practical everyday items, but few survive today in such attractive condition. The warm colour of the boxwood and the original printed decoration give it plenty of character, making it a lovely addition to a collection of antique sewing tools, treen, or haberdashery items.
The Cairo retailer's mark adds an interesting historical connection and makes this an especially appealing example for collectors of sewing antiques and unusual small curiosities.
Condition is good antique condition with age-related wear, minor marks, and light rubbing to the printed decoration consistent with age and use. The mechanism remains intact and operates as intended. Please study the photographs carefully as they form part of the description.
