A beautiful and unusual antique French Basque silver dizainier, or decade rosary, dating approximately from the late 19th to very early 20th century, circa 1880–1910.

This traditional Basque devotional piece has ten rounded silver beads arranged around an elaborate openwork circular frame. The wonderfully decorative design features scrolling, thorn-like forms surrounding the central opening, giving it an appearance reminiscent of the Crown of Thorns.

At the top is an ornate cross-shaped or floral motif with a substantial suspension ring, allowing the dizainier to have been carried, attached to a chain or kept with other personal devotional objects.

A dizainier is a traditional Catholic prayer aid used for praying one decade of the Rosary. Its ten beads represent the ten Hail Marys, making it a compact and easily carried alternative to a complete rosary.

The piece is hallmarked silver. The tiny hallmark appears to be the French sanglier, or boar’s head mark. It is positioned in a particularly difficult area to photograph, but I have included the best close-up photographs possible so that the mark can be examined.

The silver has developed a beautiful natural patina, particularly around the beads and within the intricate openwork decoration. I have left this untouched rather than heavily polishing it, preserving the character and signs of age that form part of its history.

There is some age-related wear and surface marking, as would be expected from an antique devotional object that was made to be handled and used. Please study all the photographs carefully as they form an important part of the description and show the condition, hallmark, patina and fine detail.

A particularly attractive example of a traditional Basque dizainier and a lovely piece for a collector of antique rosaries, French religious silver, Basque devotional objects or Catholic religious antiques.

Approximate date: c.1880–1910.
