A distinctive hand-carved wooden figure depicting the crowned Virgin Mary holding the infant Jesus, decorated in wonderfully time-worn polychrome colours.

Mary wears a deep rose-red pleated robe and a muted gold crown, with the Christ Child held securely in her arms. The simple carving, expressive faces and rich painted surface give the figure a warm, rustic folk-art character.

The sculpture is carved from a lightweight wood and measures 7.75 inches high by 2 inches wide and 1.75 inches deep (19.7 × 5.1 × 4.4 cm). It weighs 5 oz / 143 grams.

Its precise age and origin are uncertain, although it appears to be an older, traditionally carved devotional figure.

There is rubbing and loss to the polychrome decoration, together with small knocks and wear around the crown, robe and base. These signs of age have been left untouched and form an important part of its appearance. Please examine all photographs carefully.
