A wonderful vintage French doctor’s bag, dating from around the 1930s–1940s, made from rich brown leather with an attractive embossed finish.

This is a particularly complete example, retaining its working key and lock, together with its original fitted canvas protective cover.

The bag has a traditional rigid frame with substantial brass fittings, including the wonderfully unusual large lever catches at either end. When opened, the frame spreads wide to give excellent access to the interior – a practical design intended for a working doctor or medical professional.

Inside is the original fabric lining with divided storage pockets. The leather has developed a beautiful warm colour and patina through age and use, while the brass fittings have been left with their attractive naturally aged finish.

The original canvas protective cover is still present and fits over the bag, with leather reinforcement around the handle and fastenings. The cover shows considerable evidence of its working life, including staining, wear and some small holes. One fastening stud is missing; the remaining fastenings are present. Please see the photographs, which show its condition clearly.

The leather bag itself remains extremely attractive, with the marks, scuffs and wear expected from a genuinely used vintage piece. The handle remains securely attached, the bag opens and closes correctly, and importantly, the key is present and operates the lock.

A fabulous piece of French medical and social history and a very decorative object in its own right. Perfect for a collector of vintage medical equipment, antique luggage or French brocante, or simply as a wonderfully characterful display piece.
