Antique 19thC Polychrome Madonna and Child – Hand-Carved Wooden Folk Art Figure
SHIPPING INCLUDED
A rare hand-carved and painted wooden folk-art figure depicting the crowned Virgin Mary and the Christ Child, believed to date from the 19th century.
Mary is shown with a serene, downcast expression, wearing a deep red robe beneath a long green mantle with softly carved folds. The infant Jesus sits in front of her, raising one hand in blessing. The muted gold, red, green and cream polychrome decoration is particularly attractive and gives the figure a warm, individual character.
Possibly Spanish in origin, this devotional figure was found here in France. Its simple, expressive carving and slender form are characteristic of traditional religious folk art and Santos-style figures.
It measures 11.5 inches high by 2.5 inches wide and 2.25 inches deep (29.2 × 6.4 × 5.7 cm) and weighs 7 oz / 188 grams.
The figure is in good condition and displays beautifully. There is gentle rubbing and minor wear to the painted finish, together with a few small marks and edge losses consistent with its age and handmade character. Felt has been added beneath the base. Please examine all photographs, which form an important part of the description.
A beautiful devotional sculpture for a collection of antique Catholic art, carved wooden figures or European religious folk art.
