Antique French "Souvenir de la Mission" Standing Crucifix, Bronze Christ & Virgin, Late 19th Century
A beautiful antique French standing crucifix dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, featuring a finely detailed figure of Christ with the Virgin Mary depicted beneath. The reverse is inscribed "Souvenir de la Mission", a touching reminder of the Catholic parish missions that were once held throughout France, where devotional items such as this were often purchased or presented as keepsakes of faith.
The brass crucifix is decorated with attractive Gothic-inspired terminals featuring cherub faces, while the stepped circular base gives it an elegant, well-balanced appearance. Over many decades the brass has developed a beautiful genuine patina, giving the piece the warmth and character that only age can produce.
This is a charming devotional piece that would make a wonderful addition to a collection of French religious antiques or provide a beautiful display in a home, chapel, or prayer corner.
It remains in good antique condition with age-related wear, surface marks and a genuine aged patina consistent with its age. The reverse bears the original "Souvenir de la Mission" inscription. Please study the photographs carefully as they form part of the description.
