A striking vintage French religious medal created by Élie Pellegrin, known for his distinctive modernist Christian designs and colourful enamel work.

The front depicts Saint Francis holding an open red book decorated with two small crosses. His face, hands, monastic robes and halo are beautifully picked out in turquoise blue, deep blue, yellow, red, white and soft pink enamel.

The words “Saint François” are incorporated into the design in highly stylised, non-linear lettering. Some of the letters appear unusually ordered when read around the medal, forming part of Pellegrin’s bold modernist composition.

The reverse is decorated with a raised stylised cross or four-petalled motif surrounded by elegant scrolling lines.

The edge bears Pellegrin’s triangular maker’s cartouche, containing the letters E and P separated by a cross. The medal retains its original large hanging ring and has a warm, naturally aged bronze patina.

Élie Pellegrin was a French artist and medallist particularly known for his religious works in bronze, copper, silver and gold, often enhanced with richly coloured enamel. His highly individual designs are now increasingly sought after by collectors of French devotional art.

There is a fine age-related line in the red enamel of the book, together with minor enamel and surface wear consistent with age. The enamel remains bright and colourful, and the medal displays beautifully. Please study the close-up photographs, which form an important part of the description.
