A beautiful and highly unusual antique French rosary featuring rare hand-cut mother-of-pearl beads, a remarkable articulated silver heart centrepiece, two devotional medals, a carved mother-of-pearl crucifix, and silver fishtail chainwork throughout. Late 18th to early 19th century (circa 1780–1830)

The rosary is formed from genuine mother-of-pearl beads, each individually cut and slightly irregular in shape, giving the piece a wonderful hand-crafted character. Their soft iridescence catches the light beautifully and speaks to the quality of the rosary's construction. The beads are linked by delicate silver fishtail chain, all crafted in silver.

At the centre is an exceptional heart-shaped centrepiece formed from woven silver mesh. Fully articulated and movable, it is a rare feature that gives the rosary an elegant, almost jewellery-like quality and immediately sets it apart from more commonly encountered examples. Rosaries featuring articulated silver heart centres are seldom found and are highly sought after by collectors.

Suspended from the heart are two devotional medals that add greatly to the rosary's character and history. One is an unusual octagonal silver devotional medal with worn inscription and softened details from generations of use. Similar octagonal medals are known from the 17th and 18th centuries, although the precise attribution and age of this example remain uncertain. The second is an early devotional medal depicting the Virgin Mary beneath an ornate canopy. Both medals display significant age-related wear and contribute to the rosary's rich sense of history and authenticity.

The mother-of-pearl crucifix is particularly striking. Beautifully carved and softly luminous, it depicts Christ on one side and the Virgin Mother with hands joined in prayer on the reverse. The natural iridescence of the mother of pearl complements the silver mountings perfectly and enhances the rosary's devotional beauty.

The combination of the articulated silver heart, silver fishtail chainwork, hand-cut mother-of-pearl beads, early devotional medals, and carved mother-of-pearl crucifix suggests a rosary of considerable age. While precise dating is difficult, it is believed to date from the late 18th century to the early 19th century, possibly incorporating earlier devotional elements.

All pertinent parts are silver, including the fishtail chainwork, articulated heart centrepiece, medal fittings, and crucifix mountings.

A rare and fascinating rosary that would appeal to collectors of antique rosaries, Catholic devotional objects, and French religious antiquities.

Condition

Good antique condition with age-related wear consistent with long devotional use. The articulated heart retains its movement and flexibility, and both medals show honest devotional wear. There is a small loss to the mother of pearl on the Virgin side of the crucifix, visible on close inspection, but the crucifix remains sound and displays beautifully.
