Antique French Silver-Plated Tastevin Wine Taster, Maker Marked, c.1920–1940
An attractive antique French tastevin (wine taster) dating from the Art Deco period, circa 1920–1940. Traditionally used by wine merchants, winemakers, and cellar masters, tastevins were designed to assess the colour and clarity of wine in dimly lit cellars, with the raised bosses inside helping to reflect available light.
This example is crafted in silver plate and retains its attractive original form, featuring a finger ring handle and decorative thumb rest. The interior is decorated with a variety of raised bosses and motifs typical of traditional French tastevins.
The piece bears a maker's mark reading PE ★ MA with a J beneath the star, together with a 2G mark indicating silver plating. The maker has not yet been identified, but the marks are consistent with French silver-plated wares of the period.
A wonderful piece for collectors of wine-related antiques, French country house décor, barware, vineyard memorabilia, or anyone looking for an authentic touch of French wine-making history.
Condition is good antique condition with age-related wear, light surface scratches, and patina consistent with many years of use. Please study the photographs carefully as they form part of the description. The small one is to show the size and is not included.
