Antique Mother of Pearl Rosary: 19th Century French Catholic Fishtail Chain

This is an antique French Catholic rosary dating to the late 19th century, beautifully made with irregular hand carved mother of pearl beads linked on metal chain. Each decade is separated by a distinctive fishtail chain, which appears to be silver. The rosary measures 15.75" (40 cm) in length with a 22.5" (57 cm) circumference, giving it a graceful drape when held or worn. The pater beads measure about 9 mm and the ave beads 7 mm, adding to its tactile charm.

The rosary is completed with a matching hand carved mother of pearl crucifix measuring 1 3/8" x 0.75" (3.5 x 2 cm), and a heart-shaped aluminium devotional medal, hand tied on with a piece of thread and most likely added later by a previous owner as a personal devotional keepsake. The whole piece weighs 41.6 g, giving it a satisfying substance in the hand.

The workmanship, the irregular beads, and the hand carved crucifix all point to its late 19th-century origin. The natural shimmer of the mother of pearl, combined with its organic irregularity, gives the piece a luminous and authentic character.
