Antique French Silver First Communion Medal, Dated 1917, Christ and Communicant, Hallmarked Religious Pendant

A beautiful antique French First Communion medal dated 1917, finely made in hallmarked silver.

The front depicts Christ blessing a kneeling communicant, surrounded by delicately detailed grapevines. Christ’s halo is gilded, creating a lovely warm gold contrast against the silver. Antique French gilding was often applied using high-carat gold, although the precise gold content of the halo has not been tested. The artist or maker’s initials, M.F., appear at the lower edge.

The reverse is particularly attractive, decorated in raised relief with a cross, wheat, grapes and vine leaves—symbols associated with the Eucharist and Holy Communion. It is engraved with an ornate monogram, probably representing the original recipient’s initials, together with the date “3 Juin 1917.”

A clear French silver hallmark is present on the upper hanging ring. The medal retains its original suspension ring and has a softly aged patina that beautifully highlights the detailed relief.

Created more than a century ago to commemorate an important religious occasion, this is a lovely surviving piece of French devotional history. It would make a special addition to a collection of antique religious medals or could still be worn as a meaningful pendant.
