A wonderful antique French artist’s paint box dating from the early 20th century, complete with its original paint-stained wooden palette and an evocative collection of paints, brushes and artists’ tools.

The wooden case is beautifully constructed with dovetailed corners, metal fittings, carrying handle and a fitted, compartmentalised interior. It is stamped “BREVETÉ S.G.D.G. PARIS”, a French patent marking used on manufactured and patented articles of the period.

A particularly interesting comparison is an early 20th-century mahogany artist’s paint box recorded by Christie’s, also with a compartmentalised interior and palette and stamped “BREVETE S.G.D.G PARIS.”

The removable wooden palette is one of my favourite features. It retains layers of old paint and staining from genuine use, giving the whole piece the wonderful atmosphere of an artist’s working studio.

The box contains an assortment of oil paint tubes, brushes and other painting tools, together with four small metal paint or medium cups. These contents are of mixed ages. Paints, brushes and other consumables were naturally replaced and added during the working life of an artist’s box, and I am not suggesting that all the contents date from the same period as the box itself.

Everything has been left just as found. There are numerous paint marks, scratches, stains, knocks and other signs of many years of use. Rather than detracting from the piece, I think these are an important part of its history and character. Please study the photographs carefully as they form part of the description.

A fabulous piece for an artist or collector, and a wonderfully atmospheric decorative piece for a studio, study or creative workspace.

The paints and other consumable materials are included as part of the history and presentation of the box and are not sold as being suitable for use although some may well be.

For US customers, this item dates from the early 20th century and is over 100 years old. It is being sold as an antique and is expected to qualify for the applicable antique exemption from ordinary US import duties. Where possible, I use prepaid DDP shipping to make delivery as straightforward as possible.
