A beautiful vintage French silver and enamel medal depicting Saint Catherine of Alexandria, created by the celebrated French religious artist and medallist Élie Pellegrin.

Saint Catherine is portrayed in Pellegrin’s distinctive modernist style, holding the sword associated with her martyrdom. Her blue garment, red sleeves, pale pink face and hands, white halo and gold-coloured sword are richly decorated with vivid enamel. The words “Sainte Catherine” are incorporated into the background in stylised raised lettering.

The reverse is equally attractive, with a raised modernist cross surrounded by small connected silver beads. The circular arrangement may be a stylised reference to the wheel traditionally associated with Saint Catherine.

The rim bears two separate punches: Élie Pellegrin’s triangular E ✝ P maker’s cartouche and a French silver hallmark, confirming both the artist and the silver content.

Élie Pellegrin was a French artist known for his highly individual Christian works in silver, bronze and other metals, frequently enhanced with richly coloured enamel. His distinctive mid-century religious medals are increasingly sought after by collectors.

The medal retains its original silver hanging ring. It is in very good vintage condition, with bright, well-preserved enamel. There is light surface wear, scratching and natural patina to the silver consistent with age. Please study the close-up photographs, which form an important part of the description.
